The Student Loans Company is advising Masters’ students in England that applications for Postgraduate Loans are now open for the 17/18 academic year: www.gov.uk/postgraduateloan

A Postgraduate Loan helps with course and living costs whilst studying either a taught or research based postgraduate Master’s level course. Students can borrow up to £10,280, which is paid to them directly and is not based on household income.

The loan is available for courses studied full-time over a single year or part-time, up to four years, including distance learning and a student’s loan application covers the duration of the course.

If a student has previously received funding they can log into their online account to make an application or register for one at: www.gov.uk/studentfinance

Students do not need to have accepted a place at university to apply; they can apply using their preferred choice of course and update it later if it changes.

Derek Ross, SLC Director of Operations said;

“Students should be aware that unlike undergraduate funding they only have to apply once for the Postgraduate Loan as the application and loan is for the full length of their course. If the course is more than a year long then they will receive a letter each year confirming their upcoming payments.”

“The loan is paid directly to the student’s bank account in three instalments each academic year after the university or college has confirmed to SLC their registration on the course.”

For courses studied part-time or distance learning the amount applied for will be split evenly between each year of their course.
