West African nations are extremely vulnerable to climate change, through changes in the West African Monsoon which may have profound impacts on their health, water resources, food security and demography.
The international African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis programme (AMMA) will improve understanding of the West African Monsoon and its influence on the physical, chemical and biological environment, regionally and globally. RCUK represented by NERC is contributing £2m funding towards the AMMA programme which is one of the biggest experiments on climate and environment in Africa. AMMA involves over 1000 people from 60 research institutes and 28 countries.
