RCUK announces 2016/17 Block Grant for Open Access

19/10/2016

Research Councils UK (RCUK) have announced the open access block grant allocations for 2016/17, worth a total of £14 million and distributed across 79 institutions.

Based on the figures provided by Research Organisations, block grants have now been allocated, taking into account the open access funding received by each institution to date and their expected costs for this year.

As in previous years, the block grant is provided to support the implementation of the RCUK open access policy to ensure that the published outcomes of publicly funded research are made widely accessible as quickly as possible.

For institutions with an overall underspend of block grant funds to date, this has meant a reduction in the allocated block grant for 2016/17 compared to previous years. Where institutions have seen a significant underspend in block grant funds that are not offset by projected spend, no additional funds have been allocated for 2016/17.

For other institutions, block grant allocations have increased based on ongoing open access expenditure and anticipated open access costs this financial year.

Block grant allocations will be recalculated again for 2017/18.

All institutions will have received block grant allocation letters. For further information regarding open access contact openaccess@rcuk.ac.uk, information on the RCUK Open Access Practitioners Group can be found here.
