Universities UK has published a progress report on the concordat to support research integrity. The concordat was originally published in 2012 and was developed by Universities UK, Research Councils UK, the HE funding councils, Wellcome Trust and Government.
The progress report demonstrates that an engaged community has developed around the concordat and highlights the excellent work being done in universities to create a strong and supportive culture around research integrity. It has found that there remains more work to be done on enhancing openness and transparency. The report also recommends creating a Research Integrity Forum that will bring together stakeholders from across the UK research community to improve coordination and sustain progress and momentum.
Tony Peatfield, MRC Director of Corporate Affairs and RCUK lead on research integrity, commented: “Research integrity is vital to ensure that all stakeholders have confidence in UK research. The Research Councils are pleased to see that generally the recommendations in the Concordat have been taken up with enthusiasm by universities. The requirements of the Concordat are built into the ‘RCUK Policy and Guidelines on the Governance of Good Research Conduct’ and into the Term & Conditions of RCUK grant support. For our part, the Research Councils have been publishing an annual narrative statement since 2013 and would support the proposed Research Integrity Forum.”
