RCUK welcomes announcement on EU postgraduate research student eligibility

01/12/2016

Research Councils UK welcomes today’s announcement by Universities and Science Minister Jo Johnson which confirms that non-UK EU students applying for courses beginning in the academic year 2017/18 remain eligible for RCUK support. This updates information provided in the RCUK Statement on international collaboration post EU referendum of 6 July 2016.

Professor Philip Nelson, Chair of RCUK, said: “Supporting the most talented students at the start of their research career is something which RCUK takes very seriously. We are very pleased that both students and higher education institutions can now feel confident in moving ahead with recruitment for the next academic year. A healthy and thriving UK research base relies on being able to welcome and attract excellent researchers at all stages of their career, so we will continue to work with government to provide as much clarity and assurance for the future as possible.”

RCUK EU students are presently eligible for funding under Research Council support for postgraduate training. EU students eligible for RCUK support under current rules will continue to be eligible if currently undertaking or about to start in the 2016/17 academic year, or who have been (or will be) recruited through open competition for starting in the 2017/18 academic year, and will continue to receive funding for the duration of their courses. Future funding arrangements and immigration status for EU students will be determined as part of the UK’s discussions on its future relationship.
