Appointment of new Presiding Judges

The Lord Chief Justice, with the concurrence of the Lord Chancellor, has made the following appointments with immediate effect.

The Honourable Mr Justice Spencer has been appointed as Presiding Judge on the South Eastern Circuit with immediate effect. He replaces Mr Justice Fulford who has been elevated to the Court of Appeal. His term of appointment is until 31 December 2017.

The Honourable Mr Justice Turner has been appointed as Presiding Judge on the Northern Circuit with immediate effect. He replaces Mr Justice Ryder who has been elevated to the Court of Appeal. His term of appointment is until 31 December 2017.

The Lord Chief Justice also announced these forthcoming appointments.

The Honourable Mr Justice Teare will be appointed as Presiding Judge on the Western Circuit from 1 October 2013. He will replace Mrs Justice Sharpe who is being elevated to the Court of Appeal. His term of appointment is until 31 December 2017.

The Honourable Mr Justice Haddon-Cave will be appointed as Presiding Judge on the Midland Circuit from 1 January 2014. He will replace Mr Justice Flaux when his term of appointment ends. His term of appointment is until 31 December 2017.

The Honourable Mrs Justice Nicola Davies will be appointed as Presiding Judge on the Wales Circuit from 1 January 2014. She will replace Mr Justice Griffith Williams when his term of appointment ends. Her term of appointment is until 31 December 2017.

Mr Justice (Sir Robin) Spencer was called to the Bar Gray's Inn in 1978 and took Silk in 1999; he was made a Bencher in 2004. He was appointed a Recorder in 1998 and a deputy High Court Judge in 2001. He was appointed a judge of the High Court (Queen’s Bench Division) in 2010.

Mr Justice (Sir Mark) Turner was called to the Bar Gray's Inn in 1981 (Northern Circuit in 1982) and took Silk in 1998. He was appointed a Recorder in 2000 and a deputy High Court judge in 2007. He was appointed judge of the High Court (Queen’s Bench Division) in 2013.

Mr Justice (Sir Nigel) Teare was called to the Bar Lincoln's Inn in 1974 and took Silk in 1991. He was appointed a Recorder in 1997 and a Deputy High Court Judge in 2002. He was appointed a judge of the High Court (Queen's Bench Division) in 2006.

Mr Justice (Sir Charles) Haddon-Cave was called to the Bar Gray's Inn in 1978 (and Hong Kong in 1980) and took Silk in 1999; he was made a Bencher in 2003. He was appointed a Recorder in 2000. He conducted the Nimrod Inquiry from 2007 to 2009. He was appointed a judge of the High Court (Queen's Bench Division) in 2011.

Mrs Justice (Dame Nicola) Davies was called to the Bar Gray's Inn in 1976 and took Silk in 1992; she was made a Bencher in 2001. She was appointed a Recorder in 1998 and a Deputy High Court Judge in 2003. She was appointed a judge of the High Court (Queen’s Bench Division) in 2010. She was appointed a Senior Liaison Judge for Diversity in 2012.

Presiding Judges are responsible for the overall deployment of the judiciary and allocation of cases on their Circuit. They also have responsibility for general supervision of judges on their circuits – for example mentoring, career development and discipline.
