RCUK recognising innovators in Yorkshire and Humberside

03 January 2008

Research Councils value all the many diverse ways in which their research investments can lead to benefits for the UK society and economy. RCUK has therefore agreed to support the Yorkshire and Humberside Innovation Awards 2008, which recognise creativity and innovation within this region.

RCUK particularly wishes to celebrate successful economic impacts arising from basic or "breakthrough" research. Here serendipity has a strong role, and successful impact depends upon individuals that can spot unexpected potential and have the motivation and capability to see these through to conclusion.

RCUK has therefore decided to sponsor the Knowledge Exploitation Award. This aims to reward and celebrate the successful commercial exploitation of basic research from within Yorkshire and Humber's universities and research organisations, bringing science to market to benefit the applicant, end users and the regional economy. Some key features of the award include:

  • The award will acknowledge impact, including economic benefit, generated from the commercial exploitation of new technologies through activities such as licensing, spin out companies, joint ventures, collaborative research and development, contract research and establishment of commercial services.

  • The applicant must demonstrate a strong track record in knowledge transfer strategy and activity over an extended period, and the effective utilisation of varied routes to market and potential collaborators.

  • The application must include a brief case study detailing one specific project undertaken to bring to market an innovative new product, process or service. Applications will be judged on the success and breadth of the knowledge transfer strategy and activity, including a measurement of the economic, social and environmental impact.

Proposals should be submitted via the Yorkshire Forward website, and the deadline for proposals is 5 February 2008.
