Delegates at this year’s Science and Innovation Conference, taking place on 27 June at the QEII Conference Centre, will have the opportunity to hear about how Research Councils UK (RCUK) is fostering two-way engagement between business and researchers.
Specific examples of how this is being achieved and the benefits, including
Gateway to Research and the research and innovation campuses, will be discussed through panel sessions. Professor Dave Delpy, RCUK’s Impact Champion and Chief Executive of EPSRC, will also be giving a plenary talk at the conference about innovation and the Research Councils.
The two panel sessions (one held in the morning and one in the afternoon) will be chaired by Adrian Alsop, Director of Research Partnerships and International at the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and member of the cross Research Council Impact Group. Specifically, the discussions will cover:
Brokering connections through the Gateway to Research - a web solution which helps users to access research data sourced from across the Research Councils, helping them identify potential partners in universities to develop and commercialise knowledge. As well as highlighting some of the uses of the Gateway to Research, participants will be invited to ask questions about the portal and suggest other ways the data can be used and shared.
Stimulating innovation through research and innovation campuses - campuses provide business with excellent access to facilities and other research capabilities and infrastructure and support early stage company incubation.
Building partnerships model - used in social science from entry level up to joint centres.
Speakers include Dr Steven Harris, BAE Systems’ University & Collaborative Programmes Relationship Manager, who will talk about how he has made use of Gateway to Research, and Dr. lr. Leo Poll from Philips Innovation Services who will give a business perspective on research and innovation campuses.
This is the 10th annual sector-leading event for colleagues in business, academia and policymaking to discuss, explore and consider the key issues shaping the science and innovation agenda. These include driving growth through investment, understanding the relationships between business and research, and investing in skills and talent.

Research Councils UK (RCUK) is the strategic partnership of the UK's seven Research Councils who annually invest around £3 billion in research. We support excellent research, as judged by peer review, that has an impact on the growth, prosperity and wellbeing of the UK. To maintain the UK’s global research position we offer a diverse range of funding opportunities, foster international collaborations and provide access to the best facilities and infrastructure around the world. We also support the training and career development of researchers and work with them to inspire young people and engage the wider public with research. To maximise the impact of research on economic growth and societal wellbeing we work in partnership with other research funders including the Technology Strategy Board, the UK Higher Education funding bodies, business, government, and charitable organisations. www.rcuk.ac.uk.
