New film Cutting Edge 2012: Behind Cycling highlights exciting research behind sport

07 August 2012

A new Research Councils UK (RCUK) film highlights the research behind sport that is helping maximise UK athletes’ potential and supporting Team GB in achieving Gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Cutting Edge 2012: Behind Cycling was an opportunity for members of the public to question both the cutting-edge researchers and high-achieving athletes. The film is available to view here.

Cutting Edge 2012 is a series of events which took place across the UK in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Each event brought together world-class researchers and top Team GB stars to showcase amazing athletic demonstrations, discuss elite performance and gives the public a chance to share views on the research behind the UK’s sporting achievements.

The event, held at the ICSEMIS Conference in Glasgow on 19 July, was hosted by sports engineering lecturer Dr David James and featured three-time Olympic medallist and double track World Champion cyclist Rob Hayles. Other speakers included Professor Louis Passfield who discussed the athletes’ changes in fitness over a period of time and the rate of improvement they can expect. Physiology expert Dr Harry Rossiter talked about how to enhance elite performance in sport.

Cutting Edge 2012 is an RCUK initiative, in partnership with the Royal Institution, the Department for Innovation and Skills, The Institute of Engineering and Technology and PODIUM (the Further and Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Games).
