Review of Civil Litigation costs
Lord Justice Jackson appointed to lead a fundamental review of the rules and principles governing the costs of civil litigation and to make recommendations
Mr Justice Ramsey is currently leading for the judiciary on implementation of the Review, working to the Judicial Steering Group chaired by the Master of the Rolls.
Lord Justice Jackson published his final report of his fundamental review of the rules and principles governing the costs of civil litigation in January 2010. The report’s recommendations are now in implementation stage, with more information available below.
In November 2008 the then-Master of the Rolls, Sir Anthony Clarke, appointed Lord Justice Jackson to lead a fundamental review of the rules and principles governing the costs of civil litigation and to make recommendations in order to promote access to justice at proportionate cost.
The final report was published in January 2010 (see ‘reports’ below), and the recommendations are being taken forward in a variety of ways. A number of measures required primary legislation, and some of the major reforms are in the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012. Other reforms will be implemented through rule or policy changes.
