Lord Chief Justice welcomes Business Court announcement

Judicial Communications Office news release

News release 34/06

Lord Phillips, the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, today expressed his warm support for the building of a new Business Court.

Speaking after Her Majesty’s Courts Service had announced that a new Business Court was to be built on Fetter Lane in London, Lord Phillips said:

“This project has, and has always had, my full personal support and backing. I strongly believe that this building will provide a courthouse that reflects the importance of the cases that are heard by the Chancery Division and the Commercial Court, and increasingly in the Technology and Construction Court.

“The new building will play a key part in helping to protect the United Kingdom’s position against overseas competition, so that London remains the venue of choice for the resolution of international commercial disputes. I have no doubt this investment in new, purpose-built facilities will strengthen UK commercial and property law and benefit the financial sector generally.

“It makes great sense to me that a single court building should host the vitally important work that comes from the City of London, the rest of the UK and indeed the world through our Chancery and Commercial courts and the legal professionals who practice in those courts. The Chancellor of the High Court shares that commitment to this work being brought together into a single court building.”
