Research Councils UK (RCUK) supports highly skilled researchers, helping them
to achieve excellence with impact and ensuring that the UK has a productive economy,
healthy society and contributes to a sustainable world. We believe that supporting
excellent graduates and encouraging them to move into research training and careers
develops the next generation of academic and non-academic researchers and helps
maintain the capacity and quality of the UK research base.
When implementing the recommendations made by the Browne Review the following
should be taken into account:
- The ability to continue to achieve widening participation and attract the
best people into higher education.
- The impact on funding provision and supply of graduates across all academic
disciplines.
- The balance between teaching and research to consider the impact of pressures
on both sides as many academics are active researchers and teachers.
The supply of high quality graduates from UK HEIs is essential to the long-term
prosperity of the UK. The strength of the UK research base and the quality of our
higher education institutions attracts the best minds to conduct the highest quality
research in this country and we must preserve this valuable position into the future.

Notes for editors
Research Councils UK (RCUK) is the strategic partnership of the UK's seven
Research Councils. We invest annually around £3 billion in research. Our focus is
on excellence with impact. We nurture the highest quality research, as judged by
international peer review providing the UK with a competitive advantage. Global
research requires we sustain a diversity of funding approaches, fostering international
collaborations, and providing access to the best facilities and infrastructure,
and locating skilled researchers in stimulating environments. Our research achieves
impact – the demonstrable contribution to society and the economy made by knowledge
and skilled people. To deliver impact, researchers and businesses need to engage
and collaborate with the public, business, government and charitable organisations.
