Message from the Lord Chief Justice: Court closures

Judicial Communications Office statement

Statement /2010

23/06/2010

In response to the Written Ministerial Statement on court closures published today the Lord Chief Justice said:

"The decision whether to close courts rests with the Lord Chancellor. The judiciary cannot ignore fiscal realities when considering how to respond to individual proposals. However, it is important that both the judiciary and the public have the opportunity to comment on the proposals and this process will now take place. Consultation will draw out many sensitive issues specific to individual communities. All of the proposals will be carefully examined and, where appropriate, they will be questioned."
