Community, confidence, the magistracy and the right to a fair trial

Speech by Nicholas Moss, JP

12/02/2010

Nicholas Moss JP talked about the meaning of confidence as it applies to the justice system, and the vital importance of media coverage of the courts, showing the workings of the justice system to members of the public who were not likely to come into contact with it themselves. Nicholas Moss JP said:

“I hope I have conveyed something of what we do as magistrates; something of how we do it; and as a result, something about our contribution to our justice system so that you, like me, recognise that that elusive notion - community confidence - is not simply about the outcome of individual cases."
