About us

Land Registry is the government agency created in 1862 to register the ownership of land and property in England and Wales.

We keep and maintain the Land Register, where more than 23 million titles – the evidence of ownership – are documented.

Our vision is to put the customer, quality and innovation at the heart of land registration services.

Once land or property is entered in the register we record any ownership changes, mortgages or leases that affect it. Anyone who suffers loss because of an error or omission in the register, or because the register needs to be corrected, will normally be compensated.

We are self-financing through the charging of fees for registration and other services. We also generate income from the sale of Add Value services.

Land Registry is part of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and also a member of the Public Data Group within BIS. Chief Land Registrar and Chief Executive Malcolm Dawson is responsible to Secretary of State Vince Cable and Minister Michael Fallon.
