Appointment of new judge in charge of the Commercial Court

The Lord Chief Justice has announced the appointment of Mr Justice Gross as Judge in Charge of the Commercial Court with effect from 1 October 2009.

He succeeds Mr Justice Andrew Smith whose term of office comes to an end on 30 September 2009.

The role of Judge in Charge involves overall responsibility for the Commercial list and the judges authorised to sit in the Commercial Court, including assigning those judges to cases.

  1. Mr Justice (Sir Peter) Gross was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1977 and elected a Bencher of Gray’s Inn in 2000. He was appointed a QC in 1992 and a Recorder in 1995. He was Chairman of the London Common Law and Commercial Bar Association between 1995 and 1997; Chairman of the Bar Education and Training Committee between 1998 and 2000; and Chairman of the Bar International Relations Committee in 2001. In 2001 he was appointed a High Court Judge in the Queen’s Bench Division and was a Presiding Judge for the South Eastern Circuit between 2005 and 2008.
