Building on 10 years of the Human Rights Act: Building a better society

Speech by The Rt Hon Lady Justice Arden DBE at the Justice 10th annual Rights Law conference

Lady Justice Arden gave her thoughts about the ten years since the Human Rights Act came into force, and its consequences:

“In a nutshell, my overarching point is that the effect of the Convention has been to alter the way we think about the position of the individual in relation to the state. Where human rights are engaged, the Human Rights Act 1998 means that we now start by focusing on the rights of the individual rather than those of the majority.”
