Launch of new “Centre for Law, Justice & Journalism”

Speech by Mr Justice Eady

11/03/2010

Mr Justice Eady considered the relationship between law and journalism and the history – and vital importance – of freedom of speech, from ancient Athens via Erasmus and Thomas More. He spoke about the impact of printing on communication, the growth of the law on libel and slander, and compared the systems of England and Wales, and America.

Mr Justice Eady also looked at the rapid recent changes which have affected freedom of speech, especially human rights legislation and the need to balance conflicting demands and interests.
