Appointments of new Vice President and new Deputy Head of Civil Justice

Lord Justice Waller will be appointed as Vice President of the Civil Division of the Court of Appeal, with effect from 1 October 2006, to succeed Lord Justice Brooke, who has held this role for three years and who retires from the bench on 30 September 2006.

Lord Justice Neuberger will be appointed as Deputy Head of Civil Justice with effect from 1 January 2007, with Lord Justice Dyson stepping down from the role after three years on 31 December 2006.

Lord Justice (Sir Mark) Waller has been a Lord Justice of Appeal since 1996. He was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1964, and appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 1979. He served as a Recorder between 1986-89 and was appointed to the High Court Bench (Queen’s Bench Division) in 1989. He was Presiding Judge of the North Eastern Circuit 1992-95, Judge in charge of the Commercial list 1995-96 and Chairman of the Judicial Studies Board 1999-2003.

Lord Justice (Sir David) Neuberger has been a Lord Justice of Appeal since 2004. He was called to the Bar (Lincoln’s Inn) in 1974, and appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 1987. He served as a Recorder between 1990-96 and was appointed to the High Court Bench (Chancery Division) in 1996. He was the Supervising Chancery Judge for the Midland, Wales and Chester and Western Circuits between 2002-2004.
