TELEPHONE ORDERING SERVICE - CLOSURE REMINDER

Following a consultation earlier this year, the telephone ordering service for business customers (Telephone Services), which is used for both Land Charges and Land Registry information applications, will close from 17 December 2012. Demand for this service has reduced by 96 per cent since 2003 with almost 92 per cent of applications now ordered online, compared with 6.8 per cent by post and 1.5 per cent by telephone.

Online services are accessible for longer (6.30am to 10pm weekdays and between 7am and 5pm on Saturdays) than Telephone Services and provide a quicker alternative at a reduced cost for Land Registry information applications. Sign-up is free with Land Registry support for service users and online training available. Changes to legislation will allow Land Registry to introduce more types of electronic Land Charges applications.

Telephone enquiries can still be made by business customers calling their customer team. General enquiries from customers without a customer team relationship can be made to the customer support number 0844 892 1111.

Notes to Editors

  1. The telephone ordering service (Telephone Services) is used for Land Charges and Land Registry applications by business users with a Land Registry account. It is not available to the general public. The consultation ran from 4 May until 27 July 2012 http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/public/consultations
  2. Find out more about applying for Business e-services by contacting 0844 892 1111 or customersupport@landregistry.gsi.gov.uk
  3. Land Registry maintains registers relating to unregistered land, known as the Land Charges registers. These registers do not record ownership of unregistered land. Their primary task is to protect certain interests, for example mortgages, in unregistered land and to maintain the bankruptcy index for England and Wales.
  4. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Land Registry. As a government department established in 1862, executive agency and trading fund responsible to the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Land Registry keeps and maintains the Land Register for England and Wales. The Land Register has been an open document since 1990.
  5. With the largest transactional database of its kind detailing over 23 million titles, Land Registry underpins the economy and generates revenue by safeguarding ownership of many billions of pounds worth of property.
