New film Cutting Edge 2012: Behind Sailing highlights exciting research behind sport

A new Research Councils UK (RCUK) film highlights the next in a series of events about the research behind sport that is helping maximise UK athletes’ potential for top results at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Cutting Edge 2012: Behind Sailing was an opportunity for members of the public to question both the cutting-edge researchers and high-achieving athletes. The film is available to view here.

Cutting Edge 2012 is a series of events taking place across the UK in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Each event brings together world-class researchers and top Team GB stars to showcase amazing athletic demonstrations, discuss elite performance and gives the public a chance to share views on the research behind the UK’s sporting achievements. The next event in the series is Cutting Edge: Behind Diving which is taking place in Plymouth on Thursday 5 July. The last event in the series is taking place in Glasgow. Each one is free to attend and registration for tickets is available via the Royal Institution here.

The event was hosted by top sport’s scientist Professor Steve Haake and featured British sailor and Olympic silver medallist Simon Hiscocks. Other speakers included Dr Glen McHale, an expert in surface coatings and hydrophobicity – the ability of surfaces to repel water. Dr Judith Wolf from the National Oceanography Centre also presented a map of the currents over the racing area which shows, hour by hour, which direction the current is flowing and at what speed.

Cutting Edge 2012 is a Research Councils UK initiative, in partnership with the Royal Institution, the Department for Innovation and Skills, The Institute of Engineering and Technology and PODIUM (the Further and Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Games).
