The future of the Bar, the role of the judiciary

Speech by Lord Judge, the Lord Chief Justice

15/06/2010

Lord Judge considers the vital importance of advocacy to both the history and future of the justice system, and ways in which judges can encourage high-quality applicants in the future.

"Judges at every level – juries – Magistrates depend on this profession. Any judge will tell you how much easier it is to do justice according to law if the case is well argued, and how difficult it is when it is not. And in the longer term our judiciary must be filled by men and women of proved integrity and proved independence of mind."
