Head of Criminal Justice

Judicial Communications Office news release

News release 6/07

31/01/2007

Sir Igor Judge’s position as Head of Criminal Justice has been placed on a statutory footing. Sir Igor, who is President of the Queen's Bench Division, had been acting in that role since April 2006, when the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Phillips, became head of the judiciary and invited him to do so.

Under the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 his formal appointment was precluded. The Act was amended by Police and Justice Act 2006 and the amendment was brought into force on 15th January 2007.

This amendment has enabled the Lord Chief Justice to invite Sir Igor to be the statutory Head of Criminal Justice, and Sir Igor Judge has written to the Lord Chief Justice formally accepting that invitation.
