Legal Wales Conference

Speech by Lord Judge, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales

09/10/2009

The Lord Chief Justice paid tribute to the Welsh people and language, recognising the separate but equal status of England and Wales:

“My present office means that I am responsible for the administration of justice in Wales as Lord Chief Justice of Wales. It important for me to emphasise that when I am standing in Cardiff, as I am today, or for that matter Caernarfon, I am here as the Lord Chief Justice of Wales. In Wales, Wales comes first, and England second.”

He looked at recent – and potential – changes to the Welsh justice system as a result of devolution.
