Lord Mayor’s Dinner for Judges

Speech by Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales

16/07/2008

In his last Lord Mayor’s Dinner speech, Lord Phillips looked back at the constitutional changes of the past three years, and changes such as media training for judges. He also looked forward, both to positive steps such as the building of a new Commercial Court, and to challenges:

“‘Pro bono’ assistance is no substitute for the basic funding requirements of an efficient justice system. Looking ahead there are real concerns as to whether we are going to achieve that funding. Funding that enables us to stand still is not enough.”
