The Research Councils UK (RCUK) Energy Programme today announces its plans to
provide funding support for Geoengineering research. Climate Geoengineering has
a potential role in complementing mitigation and adaption efforts which seek to
moderate climate change.
Geoengineering research is in its relative infancy. Consequently further work
is required to ensure intelligent decisions can be made about the development and
deployment of possible technologies, should they be necessary at some point in the
future.
The RCUK Energy programme will be running a scoping workshop, to identify the
major challenges for Geoengineering and the potential research themes for our future
activities.
The scoping workshop will be held on the 19th October 2009, at the Guoman Cumberland
Hotel in London.
This initial event will be followed by a 'Sandpit'. This will be an interactive
workshop for attendees from multiple disciplines, which facilitate and encourage
lateral thinking in order to generate radical approaches to addressing particular
research challenges. This event is likely to be held in spring of 2010.
Full details on the initial Scoping Workshop and how to apply will be released
on the
EPSRC website on the 8th of September 2009.
