The Supreme Court: Is the House of Lords 'losing part of itself'?

Speech by Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, Master of the Rolls

02/12/2009

The Master of the Rolls – from his perspective both as a judge and a former Law Lord – talked about the transfer of the Lords of Appeal in Ordinary to the new Supreme Court. He asked: “Is the House of Lords ‘losing part of itself’? Is it, in the Supreme Court, losing a daughter or gaining a son? Or have the Law Lords simply transmogrified themselves into Supreme Court Justices, indistinguishable in everything but name, robes, logo and location?”

He compared the new Supreme Court to its US counterpart, and considered potential future reforms.
