Just eight weeks into his tenure as Master of the Rolls, Lord Neuberger looked back to the earliest holder of the office – in 1265 – and the changing responsibilities of the post over the past 800 years, leading to the MR’s current position as Head of Civil Justice.
He also looked at the challenges of today, including:
- straitened finances
- the conflicting demands of the High Court and the other civil courts, and
- the increase in legislation.
