Deputy Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales

The Lord Chief Justice, with the agreement of the Lord Chancellor, has appointed the Honourable Mr Justice Leveson to act as the Deputy Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales. The appointment will take effect on 1 January 2006 and will be for a period of one year.

This appointment has been made in response to the increased responsibility placed upon the Senior Presiding Judge largely as a consequence of the constitutional reforms which will be introduced on 1st April 2006.

Mr Justice (Brian) Leveson (56) was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1970. He took Silk in 1986, and has been a Bencher since 1995. He acted as a Recorder between 1988 and 2000 and as a Deputy High Court Judge between 1998 and 2000. He was appointed a Judge of the High Court, Queen’s Bench Division, in 2000, and has served as a Presiding Judge of the Northern Circuit since 2002. The latter appointment is due to end on 31st December 2005.
