Science in Society - Living With Environmental Change
The ESRC is pleased to welcome applications to conduct two separate research
syntheses to uncover what current academic and non-academic literature and reports
state about public attitudes to the environment. It is intended that these syntheses
will outline the existing data and highlight the trends and gaps in knowledge.
Living With Environmental Change (LWEC) is one of six of the Research Council's
cross-council research programmes. It is a ten year programme designed by many partners
and is made up of existing research, new programmes and schemes. LWEC will bring
together researchers from across the different disciplines in the natural, engineering,
economic, social, medical, cultural, arts, and humanities. It will engage with businesses,
government bodies, NGOs and the public to understand the research challenges the
social and economic implications of environmental change. The programme is governed
by a Partners Board consisting of the different funding partners. The Director of
the programme is Professor Andrew Watkinson.
Applications can be made for up to £15,000 for each synthesis, with additional
funding available for outputs and dissemination. It is anticipated that each synthesis
will be conducted from a period of 1 April 2009 to 31 July 2009.
These syntheses offer the opportunity to briefly review academic literature and
public reports published on the subject of public attitudes to environmental change.
It is anticipated that each synthesis will provide an overview of general trends
and where possible, an overview of public attitudes to specific areas such as climate
change; ecosystem management; human, plant and animal health alteration due to environmental
change; UK infrastructures and associated systems including carbon allowances; and
analysis of attitudinal groups such as views from different cultural, social and
economic groups.
The ESRC welcomes applications from researchers, normally located in a Higher
Education Institutes and also from researchers in non-HE institutions, for example
government departments, third sector or consultant based.
Closing date for paper applications is 4pm on 9 February 2009.
Application forms and further information can be found on the
ESRC website.
