Research Councils UK publishes annual review 2006/07

10 August 2007

RCUK today publishes its first annual review. It provides an insight into the increase in the joint activities of the Research Councils since RCUK was formed 5 years ago, from collaborative multidisciplinary research programmes, training and science in society to greater harmonisation to increase collective efficiency and effectiveness.

The review features contributions from each of the seven Research Council Chief Executives, symbolising the role that each of them plays in representing the collective interests of the Councils.

Among the highlights during the year were:

  • Publication of RCUK strategies for Science in Society and Research Careers & Diversity.
  • Opening of the Diamond Light Source, enabled by the RCUK Large Facilities Roadmap.
  • Publication of an action plan to increase the economic impact of the Research Councils.
  • A new cross-Council agreement for handling research proposals spanning the remit of more than one Council.
  • An updated position statement on access to research outputs.
  • The initiation of the Shared Service Centre Project, to merge the back-office functions of the Research Councils.
