House of Lords Science and Technology Committee

04 July 2006

The Research Councils have submitted evidence to the Committee's inquiry into Science teaching in schools. The Councils are concerned by the decline in number of students studying science and maths in post-compulsory education and its potential impact on UK economic competitiveness. The reasons for this are complex but it is likely that availability of specialist teachers is a signficant factor, particularly in physics. RCUK welcomes the ambitious targets set by the Government to address this problem. In its evidence, the Research Councils outline a number of schemes designed to provide support for teachers and generate enthusiasm for science in schools. The full submission can be found here PDF, 103KB. PPARC has submitted additional evidence PDF, 34KB describing specific issues within its remit.
