This year sees the third Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award, jointly sponsored by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and the Office of Government Commerce.

The Award recognises excellence in both design and procurement. It is open to any publicly funded construction project regardless of size or procurement route. Past entries have included new buildings, major refurbishments, infrastructure and public realm projects. Last year's winner was the City Learning Centre, Bristol.

Sir Stuart Lipton, Chairman of CABE, commented:

"As the Prime Minister's awards enter their third year, the standard of entries continue to impress. These awards dispel the myth that good design in the public sector is a costly luxury. Good design and construction delivers better value for money and better services to the public as previous entries have demonstrated."

Application forms, which need to be filled in by the architects or clients of the new buildings, are available on the CABE web site. This years entries need to have been completed since 1st January 2002 and been in use by 1st January 2003. The deadline for entries is the 24th April 2003.

The short-list will be announced in June and the winner will be presented with the Award at a ceremony in London on the 22 October 2003.
