We are looking for nominations for the best new public building in the UK to win the Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Building.

Any building work which has been paid for with public money, be it a school, hospital, library or bridge and was completed between January 1 2001 and January 1 2002 is eligible for nomination. Last year's winner was the hugely popular new Tate Modern.

The Prime Minister commented:

"I am delighted to be able to put my name to this Award. This government is determined to show that good design is not just about creating attractive buildings, and environments in which children learn better or patients recover quicker. Good design can also be good for business and good for the environment. This Award will recognise the progress which is being made in the vitally important area of design quality."

Application forms, which need to be filled in by the architects or clients of the new buildings, are available on the CABE web site or by phoning 020 7960 2400. If you have a favourite new building, perhaps a hospital or school that you work in, a bridge that you walk over or a library or gallery that you enjoy visiting, why not encourage the people who made it possible to enter for the Award. The closing date for nominations is 1 May 2002, so there is still plenty of time to get applications in.

The short-list will be announced in late July 2002 and the winner will be presented with the Award at a ceremony in London in October 2002.
