Glasgow's New Stobhill Hospital wins Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award

The pioneering New Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow. designed by Reiach and Hall Architects, has won this year’s Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award.
New Stobhill Hospital reworks the entire way in which healthcare is delivered. It is the first dedicated ambulatory care and diagnostic facility in Scotland. Medical tests and consultations are carried out on the same day and surgical patients who would normally need an overnight stay are able to go home the same day.
The ethos of ‘patient first’ has governed the hospital’s design, which creates a reassuring, calm environment. Patients and visitors enter a glazed arcade filled with natural light. The building is easy to navigate: the reception is prominent and all departments can be pointed out from it. Vertical circulation is at the centre of the space, with a bold, full-height staircase tower.
Quiet waiting areas overlook larch-clad internal courtyards and artworks are integrated throughout the building. Staff enjoy bright offices and a canteen with a roof terrace commanding views of the Campsie Fells.
The simple structure – a four-storey north treatment block and three-storey linear south consulting block, linked by the arcade – helps the hospital work efficiently. Its steel frame construction with lightweight internal partitioning makes adaptation and extension easy.
The hospital opened in May 2009 and is serving around 400,000 patients a year. Robert Calderwood, Chief Executive, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said:
‘Services have been designed around the needs of patients to enhance the quality of care and speed up diagnosis and treatment. The hospital has improved the patient experience by providing swifter treatment, with fewer hospital visits, and has enabled staff to work more effectively.’
CABE chief executive Richard Simmons added:
‘New Stobhill Hospital shows the enormous value to the community of investing in high-quality design that delivers more efficient public services.’
Procured under a PFI contract, the hospital was completed on time, with no defects, and has an excellent energy efficiency rating. A collaborative procurement approach and efficient use of space and materials kept the building on budget.
The award is part of the British Construction Industry Awards. It is sponsored jointly by CABE, the Office for Government Commerce and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
