When you can expect your money

The table shows when you’ll likely get your first, second and third payments if you’re starting your course in September. If you have a different start date, your payment dates will be different.

First payment September 2018
Second payment January 2019
Third payment April 2019

Your money will be paid in three instalments based on the term start dates by your university or college.
You can find your expected payment dates in your online account.

Getting your first payment

If you’ve applied for student finance before the deadline, provided any evidence we’ve asked for and registered at your university or college; we’ll pay your Maintenance Loan on the date shown in your online account.

Payment statuses

When you’re logged into your account, the ‘Your finance’ page will show a status next to each of your payments. Find out what each status means below.

We’ll make your payment once your uni or college has confirmed you’ve registered for your course.

We’ve got all your evidence. Your loan has been approved for payment.

Your payment is on its way. It usually takes up to 3 working days to reach your bank account.

You could be missing your bank details or we might be confirming your National Insurance number. It can take up to two weeks to confirm your National Insurance number with the Department for Work and Pensions. You’ll be paid automatically once this is done. Find out more about why your payment might be blocked.

Your payment was returned to us. Check your bank or building society details are correct.

If you can’t see your payment dates, it’s because your application hasn’t been approved yet and is still being processed. You should make sure you’ve sent us all the information we’ve asked for and keep checking back for updates.

Your first payment

After you register at uni or college, any Maintenance Loan you’re getting will be paid into your bank account. We’ll normally send you a text message to let you know when this has been done. It can take 3 working days for your money to clear. If you need to check any details, login to your student finance account.

You’ll be charged interest as soon as you get your first payment and throughout your course until your loan is paid off or cancelled.

You’ll only start repaying your loan and any interest the April after you’ve finished or left your course, and only then when your income is over the repayment threshold.

Is your payment late?

If you’ve registered at your university or college but still haven’t got your money, don’t panic! Check your online account for any updates.

You might see your payment status as blocked – this might be because:

  • we’re still checking your National Insurance number, which can take up to 10 working days before we can process your payment
  • the bank details you provided may not be correct
  • we need more evidence from you before we can process your application

To check if we have asked for more evidence from you, log into your online account , go to the ‘Letters & emails’ section and you’ll see if there are any emails or letters we’ve sent you.
