NSS optional banks cognitive testing 2017: Phase 1

This report outlines the key findings and recommendations of a programme of cognitive testing work relating to the National Student Survey (NSS). The testing used cognitive interview techniques to explore students’ comprehension of the question statements and terminologies for optional bank questions that will appear in the 2018 NSS survey.

The optional bank questions tested relate to contact hours, enterprise and entrepreneurship, skills and employability, course delivery, personal development and course content and structure.

This phase of cognitive testing was conducted with 100 final year undergraduate students across the UK in summer 2017.

This report presents the key findings and recommendations for each optional bank of questions.

This report outlines the key findings and recommendations of a programme of cognitive testing work relating to the National Student Survey. The testing used cognitive interview techniques to explore students’ comprehension of the question statements and terminologies for optional bank questions that will appear in the 2018 NSS survey.

The optional banks questions tested relate to welfare, resources and facilities, workload, intellectual motivation, work placements, assessment, entrepreneurship and student safety.

This phase of cognitive testing was conducted with 72 final year undergraduate students across England in autumn 2017.

This report presents the key findings and recommendations for each optional bank of questions.

Based on this research, we intend to work with students and providers to examine whether more fundamental changes to the optional bank are needed from 2019 onwards.
