The previous welfare surveys were carried out to seek assurance that slaughterhouses are taking active steps to comply with domestic and European legal requirements and achieve necessary animal welfare standards. The surveys provide a useful snapshot of compliance with animal welfare requirements and the results are used to inform future policy changes and developments in animal welfare safeguards.

In May 2016, we carried out a survey on CCTV in slaughterhouses in England and Wales – all 278 operating slaughterhouses voluntarily took part. It is the fourth time the FSA has gathered data on CCTV in slaughterhouses as part of its animal welfare programme. Results of animal welfare surveys carried out by the FSA in 2011, 2013 and 2015 in slaughterhouses are also available.
