FSA Board

The FSA’s Board is chaired by Heather Hancock and has between eight and twelve members. They are responsible for the overall strategic direction of the FSA.
The next open FSA Board meeting will be on

6 December 2017

About the Board

The Board ensures the FSA fulfils its legal obligations so that its decisions or actions take proper account of scientific advice, the interests of consumers and other relevant factors.

The FSA is governed by the Board, rather than directly by ministers, because the FSA is a non-ministerial government department. Day-to-day management of the FSA is delegated to officials through the Chief Executive.

The Board is mainly appointed by the Secretary of State for Health, with one member appointed by the Welsh Health Minister and one by the Northern Ireland Health Minister. Information about how the Board works can be found in the Code of Conduct and Standing Orders documents below.

Board meetings

The Board holds meetings in public, and publishes meeting agendas, papers and decisions. You and other members of the public can attend open meetings to see the Board's discussions about the FSA's policies.
