The government wants to significantly reduce childhood obesity over the next 10 years. The childhood obesity plan, published in August 2016, sets out the action we are taking to reduce childhood obesity, working with local communities, the food industry, schools and the NHS.
Childhood obesity: a plan for action
The main measures in the plan are:
- introducing a soft drinks industry levy, where companies will pay a charge for drinks containing added sugar
- launching a programme to reduce sugar in the products that contribute to children’s sugar intake
- making school food healthier
- helping children to get an hour of physical activity a day
Progress so far
- Public Health England (PHE) has been asked by government to tackle excess calorie consumption by children.
- The Department of Health has announced £5 million of funding for a new obesity research policy.
- HM Treasury has consulted on the soft drinks industry levy and published the government response to the consultation.
- Food manufacturers and retailers, such as Tesco, have reduced sugar in some products, and others have committed to reducing sugar, such as Lucozade, Waitrose and Petits Filous.
- The Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP) have announced new rules for children’s media, banning the advertising of high fat, salt or sugar food or drinks from July 2017.
- NHS England has run a consultation on selling sugary drinks in hospitals.
