Accessibility and usability of our website

The Bank of England is committed to providing a website that is accessible to all users, regardless of age, ability, or technology.

As such, we are continually reviewing our content to increase the accessibility and usability of our website. Further information can be found below.


Our goal is to achieve conformance to Level AA of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG) on all content across our site. Due to the significant volume of content on the site, we are seeking to achieve compliance with these standards over a period of time, on a best efforts basis. 

While we always aim to communicate as clearly and simply as possible, some of the content on our website, given its technical nature, may require an established level of technical knowledge and understanding.



When selected, all documents on our website will open in a new window, allowing users to continue their browsing experience from their current page.

Any document that is larger than two megabytes (MB), will have the size noted in brackets alongside the link.
If you do not have the latest version of Microsoft Office software, you may experience problems when opening some of the documents on our website. You can install the Microsoft Compatibility Pack using the link found under External Links, which will allow you to open documents that have been created in the newer versions of Microsoft Office.


The majority of images used on our site include a descriptive ALT tag that is displayed when the cursor passes over the image – we are working to ensure this is the case for all images.

Visual design

Our website uses cascading style sheets for visual layout.

Interactive content

Much of the interactive content on our website has been created in Flash.  If you do not have Adobe Flash Player, the content will be unable to load. You can download the latest version of the player to your device by following the link under External Links.

A Non-Flash version of interactive content is made available wherever possible, which should be used by those accessing our website on Apple devices (with which Flash is not compatible).  

Browsing experience

Our website is compatible with all internet browsers - some browsers may make our site look slightly different in appearance, however all of our content should be available and accessible from all browsers. To maximize your browsing experience, we recommend using the latest supported browsers.

All internet browsers allow you, as the user, to alter the way websites are displayed (e.g. font size), please use your browser settings to display our website in the way best suited to you.  

Internet Explorer 32-bit

When using Internet Explorer (IE) in conjunction with Windows XP, some of our drop-down filters may not display fully. As part of the XP edition, IE provides two versions of the browser - a 32-bit, and a 64-bit. If you experience any issues in displaying filters, please switch to use the 64-bit version.

Responsive design

Our website does not have the capabilities to adjust in size and layout based on the browsing device (mobile phone, tablet etc). It is therefore best to access our site from a desktop, where browsing will be easiest.

We understand that with ever-changing technologies it is important for our site to be responsive and accessible from all devices, so we will be ensuring responsive design is built into the next redesign of our website.
