Social media provides simple and effective ways to share information. So, very often, we use our key channels to share the information we publish. 

We also listen to what people say on social media about HEFCE, our work and higher education policy. 

If appropriate, we will answer queries and questions, take part in relevant discussions, and support a well-informed, high-quality debate based on robust evidence.  

We maintain a presence on several social media channels, but our current key focus is Twitter and HEFCE’s corporate blog. 


We use Twitter in many different ways, including to: 

  • share the information we publish, key facts and figures
  • promote events, and comment on them as they happen
  • monitor ‘mentions’ of HEFCE and some other ‘hashtags’
  • respond to direct questions about matters of fact
  • ‘follow’ other organisations
  • retweet material we deem appropriate
  • tweet links to suitable external content that informs the debate about higher education policy and practice. 

By taking part in discussions or sharing information published by other organisations we seek to support a high-quality discussion. 

We do not endorse all the material we expose. Indeed we may tweet links to material which does not reflect the Council’s, or the Government’s, view.  

But we do want the debate to be respectful, constructive, and informed. 

So we aim to ‘curate’ a discussion which broadly falls within these editorial values. 

The HEFCE blog 

We use the HEFCE blog to stimulate debate and discussion, and to explore key issues in the work we do. In so doing, we draw on the long-established knowledge, opinion and expertise of HEFCE’s staff, covering areas of policy, funding, regulation and statistical analysis. 

We also publish expert knowledge and opinion from across higher education and other sectors, where it clearly relates to our areas of business. 

In a similar way to Twitter, we expect to publish posts which reflect a variety of opinion, provided the discussion is civil, positive and balanced.
