Our perception of the world is based on imagination and memory as much as physical experience. Each of us carries around in our heads a picture of the world as we perceive it. How does this virtual world compare with the physical reality? Can virtual travel ever be a satisfactory substitute for the actual experience of ‘being there’? Indeed, is virtual travel actually better than the real thing, taking us to places we could otherwise never visit or to worlds which no longer exist or exist only in the realm of the imagination?
