In the hot seat: Joshua Bicknell, CEO of Balloon Ventures

ICS Entrepreneur volunteer, Marie-Gabrielle de Liedekerke, volunteered with Balloon Ventures in Kenya last year. Today at the Youth Summit she interviewed the CEO of Balloon, Joshua Bicknell, about the Global Goals and entrepreneurship. Which Global Goal will you commit to achieving and why? I commit to Number 8 and 10 because it is at the heart of everything. If you look at the Kenyan Post Election violence, you can see that it was rooted in a lack of economic opportunities. Entrepreneurship is about giving people opportunities to build businesses that will employ people. Capitalism as a creative force is amazing but it’s not good at distributing it fairly. Entrepreneurship is about tweaking capitalism to make it fairer by giving people more opportunities to enter the system. Why do young people matter? The future is always ours! We have to create the world we want to live in. Also if you just look at the statistics, there is a huge growing young population around the world. This has a huge potential but also huge risks of leading to more violence if changes doesn’t happen. What made you come to the Youth Summit? It’s amazing to have so many young people with the same interest in development and yet so many different ways of achieving it. It’s also great to have it at the centre of government. Many young people don’t feel they have a voice in politics and having it at DfID is a great way to have their voice heard. To find out more about Balloon Ventures,...
