  • The Older People's Health and Wellbeing Atlas

As the population ages the health and wellbeing of older people and the provision of services to meet their needs becomes increasingly important.
The updated Atlas can be used to identify deficits in the health and care of older people and to highlight large variations between local authorities across England. The information will be of use to the wide range of organisations with an interest in the health and care of older people. The information will help those responsible for:

    • delivering strategies for prevention and early intervention to improve the health and wellbeing of older people
    • providing evidence and intelligence to support the development of Joint Strategic Needs Assessments for their local area.
Annex A lists the indicators updated in the November 2012 release of the Atlas. With the inclusion of these updated indicators over 100 indicators relevant to the health and wellbeing of older people are presented at local authority level.

  • Deaths from urological cancers in England 2001 - 2010

This report published by the National End of Life Intelligence Network presents the latest available data on deaths from urological cancers in England.
Urological cancers include penile, prostate, testicular, kidney, renal pelvis and ureter, and bladder cancers.
The aim of the report is to help end of life care commissioners and providers improve planning and service delivery in line with the needs and wishes of patients.
People dying with a urological cancer have specific end of life care needs. The report highlights variations by cancer type, age, sex, region, place of death and socioeconomic status, which helps us understand those needs better.
The report also includes information on hospital admission costs in the last year of life and how they vary by type of urological cancer.

  • Consultation on the methods used to estimate alcohol related hospital admissions for England

Views are being sought on the methods used to estimate alcohol-related hospital admissions for England. The consultation is being carried out by North West Public Health Observatory, as lead Public Health Observatory for substance misuse, in partnership with the Health and Social Care Information Centre and the Department of Health.

The aim is to engage with the users about the methods used to construct the estimates to ensure that the figures remain relevant, easy to interpret and meaningful. The consultation has been driven by an improved understanding of the methodological issues associated with estimating alcohol-related admissions and, linked to that, the inclusion within the Public Health Outcomes Framework of an alcohol-related admissions indicator3 and the need to ensure this indicator is the best available for that purpose.
