FGM Risk Indication System (FGM RIS) - Local System Integration

About this information standard

SCCI has authorised the release of an Advance Notification (AN) for a new information standard supporting the objectives of the Department of Health's FGM Prevention Programme. It is intended to be adopted on a national basis so that whenever and wherever a female child is provided with health care the potential risk of FGM will be known.

It is proposed to introduce a requirement for Health IT systems to use a messaging facility for the purpose of producing an automatic alert message when a female child patient is at risk of FGM, as recorded in the national FGM RIS core service. This will increase access to and improve timeliness of FGM risk information for all relevant healthcare professionals.

A phased approach to implementation is planned, starting from March 2017. Full conformance is planned for 31 March 2019.
