Information Governance Toolkit

About this information standard

This release introduces a change to the information standard SCCI0086, formerly approved by the Information Standards Board (ISB).

The Information Governance Toolkit is a Department of Health (DH) Policy delivery vehicle that the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) is commissioned to develop and maintain. It draws together the legal rules and central guidance set out by DH policy and presents them in a single standard as a set of information governance requirements. The organisations in scope of this are required to carry out self-assessments of their compliance against the IG requirements.

The IGT has two functional aspects:-

  1. To provide interpretative advice and guidance.
  2. To provide NHS organisations with a means of self-assessing performance against key aspects of information governance, the toolkit contains a set of six initiatives or work areas:
  • Information Governance Management.
  • Confidentiality and Data Protection Assurance.
  • Information Security Assurance.
  • Clinical Information Assurance.
  • Secondary Uses Assurance.
  • Corporate Information Assurance.

This information standard is published under section 250 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012. An Information Standards Notice (see below) provides an overview of scope and implementation timescales, and the Specification and Implementation Documents provide further detail for those who have to implement the information standard.
