Equality and diversity

We have a commitment to ensure that equality and diversity is integrated at the core of our business and responds to the needs of our workers, stakeholders and service users.

What do we mean by equality and diversity?

Equality is a legal framework to protect against discrimination, promote equality of opportunity and foster good relations between people with 'protected characteristics'.

Diversity is the valuing of our individual differences and talents, creating a culture where everyone can participate, thrive and contribute.

We integrate equality and diversity into our policy development, service delivery and employment practices:

The Equality Act 2010 sets out the new public sector Equality Duty replacing the three previous duties for race, disability and gender.

The Duty now covers the following 'protected characteristics':

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race (including ethnic or national origins, colour or nationality
  • Religion or belief (including lack of belief)
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
  • Marriage and civil partnership

The Duty requires public bodies to have due regard for the need to:

1. eliminate unlawful discrimination

2. advance equality of opportunity

3. foster good relations

Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act replaces the previous anti-discrimination laws with a single Act. It simplifies the law, removing inconsistencies and making it easier for people to comply with it.

A key measure of the Act is the public sector Equality Duty which came into force in 2011. Its aim is to ensure that public bodies play their part in making society fairer.
