General Ophthalmic Services Activities Statistics Table 4

BAAS Licence: R00025
Frequency: Yearly

Background to the collection

The objective of the General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) is to provide (through high-street opticians' practices), preventative and corrective eye care for children, people aged 60 and over, people on low incomes, and those suffering from or pre-disposed to eye disease.

The statistics are derived from data entered onto the Central Ophthalmic Payments System, an HSCIC product accessed via Open Exeter and from Table 4 collected on the Omnibus collection tool.

For those organisations collecting Table 4 data only:

As part of the Health and Social Care Information Centre's commitment to reducing the burden of central collections on the NHS, and in response to our Consultation on eye care publications the collection of sight tests data by patient category ('Table 4') is now collected once a year, as opposed to twice. Returns should be sampled from sight test claims for the full reporting year.
