Safety and Sense of Safety

People feel safer where there is effective lighting, good visibility and where they can be seen and heard by other people. Design can help to make areas user-friendly, easy to understand, enable use by a range of people.

Community involvement and good management is also effective in creating more secure environments

The key concepts are:

  • Ensure natural surveillance through buildings which front the street, windows and a mix of uses
  • Minimise conflict by providing safe routes for walking and cycling
  • Promote a sense of ownership of public spaces amongst community
  • Design security fences and grills as sculptures or art
  • Main entrances should be well lit and near to public transport or parking
